Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System in 2025.
Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.
Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Players will gain the option to challenge certain rulings from the official, mirroring the system currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This development follows just a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can initiate.
Practical Application
An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.
Further Updates
Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
