The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced twice from corners in the first half to place their strong form at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a number of chances, while Vicario made a series of excellent stops to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to review the score on the screen and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's team into third place in the division, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and sit six points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven fulfils duties at both ends of pitch

Following a drab weekday display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a only two shots on target, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defence, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair handled excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have worn off somewhat and fans flocked to the gates after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two recognised strikers - had netted only one league goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to add to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having room and opportunity to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, too, was unable to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. Most of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Spurs box.

The Toffees: The team head to the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on early November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: The London club travel to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup match against Newcastle.
