Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that people who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users using such treatments should be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually experience a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the drugs explains the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Users who have stopped the medication explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
