Blues Boss Maresca Dismisses Man City Speculation as Pure Rumour
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has labelled fresh talk linking him with a move to Manchester City as nothing but hearsay.
The 45-year-old, who once served as Pep Guardiola's right-hand man at the Etihad, responded to the ongoing speculation surrounding his future.
Maresca, appointed Chelsea boss in June 2024, has a contract that runs through the end of the decade, with a possible extension option.
"It doesn't affect me at all because I know that is completely unfounded," Maresca said. "And at this moment, there is little room for such distractions."
He further elaborated, "First of all, because I have a contract here for several more years. And my focus, I said many times, is solely on this club and I'm honoured to be here. But again, it's rumour. One week ago I was connected to a role in Italy with Juventus. So I don't pay attention because I know that is without foundation."
Chelsea, presently placed fourth in the Premier League, are scheduled to face Newcastle United on Saturday in a 12:30 GMT fixture.
Tensions After Previous Remarks
Maresca's latest statement follow in the wake of he referred to a recent 48-hour period as his "worst" since joining Chelsea.
Those original remarks had sparked considerable speculation of a possible rift between the coach and the club's key decision-makers.
When pressed if he had discussed matters with the club's leadership, Maresca responded, "We are in the same facility, so we speak about various topics. But about the post-Everton media session, no."
The Italian however affirmed he would definitely stay at the club next season and urged supporters to "continue to support the team".
In brighter news, Maresca indicated that injured forwards Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could return ahead of schedule, potentially in contention for a fixture against Aston Villa on 27 December.
Perspective: An 'Open Wound'
The perceived strain between Maresca and the Chelsea board persists as an unhealed issue that still cause concern.
While there has been no further escalation of the matter publicly, there has also been no resolution offered, creating the matter unaddressed.
The mood during these press conferences has become increasingly awkward, raising fears it could impact what has up to now been a promising beginning to the season.
Chelsea's on-field situation is strong: they are fourth in the Premier League, have reached the League Cup semi-finals, and can secure a better European position with strong performances in their remaining games.
The lingering question is whether this off-field situation might begin to disrupt a squad that was just starting to look settled.
