An individual earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader just before it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from non-public details of the event.

Sudden Shift in Wagers

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion rose in the hours before President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that Maduro had been seized.

One account, which joined the platform last month and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $436,000 from a initial bet of $32,537.

The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Market statistics shows that traders assessed the probability of a political change at just 6.5% in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.

But the odds had climbed to over 10% by late Friday night and surged in the first hours of January 3rd, suggesting a sharp shift in market sentiment right before the official statement was made.

"That trade has all the signs of a bet based on confidential knowledge," said an industry expert.

A handful of other platform users also made large payouts from predicting the capture.

Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges

Politicians are starting to take note.

Proposed legislation introduced on recently aims to prohibit government employees from making trades on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.

Market Background

Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in recent years, with traders able to predict everything from elections to politics.

The industry were examined under the Biden administration. Yet it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.

Insider trading is a crime in the stock market, but there are more ambiguous rules in the prediction market space.

A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
